120 YEARS AGO

Eureka County authorities have plastered up the hole in the county jail through which so many prisoners have escaped. To make assurance doubly sure, they have stretched a mosquito netting over the outside. Yesterday, Alfred Lillenfeld, found guilty of exhibiting a deadly weapon in a threatening manner, was fined $200 by Justice Cary. The money was paid.

100 YEARS AGO

Thursday at midnight the citizens were aroused by the ringing of fire bells. In a few minutes, the heavens were illuminated by the blaze, and a rush was made for what seemed to be the government building (now the Paul Laxalt Building). Toupin Saloon was on fire, and last were the Western Union office, the Conolley tailoring and repair shop, Topagna's barber shop and Ed Toupin's neat saloon. The fire was the most destructive in a number of years, and the old wooden buildings will be torn down. $5,000 loss with little insurance.

70 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Joseph Olcovich dies in San Francisco. The Olcoviches spent their early married life in Carson City in the dry-goods business and then went to South America to manage a large coffee plantation. (They owned what is now the Olcovich-Meyers home)

50 YEARS AGO

Jock Taylor, former editor in Carson City, moves the Reese River Reveille of Austin to Ely for the winter. Taylor becomes editor of the Ely Daily Times and Record. The paper was printed in the past in Fallon, now in Ely.

20 YEARS AGO

Lt. Gov. Bob Cashell describes a National Tour Association meeting in Houston as "superlative." He is former chairman of the Tourism Commission.

10 YEARS AGO

Works of prize-winning photographer Jerry Ikenberry featured in display at Carson City Library. The display includes Idaho Shoshone in dance regalia.
