Galena boys basketball coach Tom Maurer has had many big wins in his career at the school.

The Grizzlies' latest big win, a 38-37 victory at Fallon on Friday, was the most important of the season because it kept Galena in the Northern 4A playoff race. Galena improved to 4-4 in the High Desert League, strengthening its position to finish in the top four in the league and qualify for the playoffs.

"I've won a lot of games and this one was huge," Maurer said. "I thought it was a huge win for us because it got us back on track."

The win was also a big road win at Fallon, always a difficult place to play. "I'm just excited walking out of there with a win," Maurer said.

The game was close throughout as Galena led 33-32 after three quarters. Galena made a defensive stand in the last 38 seconds when Fallon went for the last shot to preserve the win. "I thought we did a great job defensively," Maurer said.

Joe Heaton led Galena with 16 points, scoring nine of his points in the third quarter.
