CHS swim teams split

Without four of their top swimmers, the Carson High girls swim team were still able to turn in a competitive effort against South Tahoe on Saturday.

Swimming without Lauren Costella, Kate Hardt, Megan Keller and Tara Theilemann, Carson lost to South Tahoe 158-137. "The girls did really well," Carson coach Monica Weaver said.

Carson's boys rolled to a 165-103 win against South Tahoe.

Costella was competing at the United States Spring National Championships, Keller was on a recruiting trip, Hardt was out with an illness and Theilemann was training for the junior nationals.

The girls were led by Karen Burke, who won the 500-yard freestyle (5:47.59) and the 100 butterfly (1:08.32). Burke, Alison Cardinal, Janine Stone and Erica McAfee also won the 400 free relay (4:26.90).

Stone and Julie Struble went one-two in the 200 free, with Stone finishing in 2:23.62 and Struble finishing in 2:33.56. Cardinal won the 100 free (1:04.96) as well.

In diving, Tamara Hall won and Rachael Morrison placed second for Carson.

For the boys, Ryan Theilemann placed first and Kiel Costella took second in the 200 individual medley.

Carson swept all three relays, Costella, Ben MacCarty, Theilemann and Jake Oxoby won the 200 medley relay, Costella, Kyle McAfee, MacCarty and Theilemann won the 400 free relay (3:51.21) and Andrew Cardinal, Kevin Millim, Wyatt Wright and Michael Lesmes won the 200 free relay (2:08.31).

Carson went one-two-three in the 50 free, with Oxoby winning, Lesmes taking second and Millim placing third.

The Senators took the top four spots in the 100 breaststroke: Theilemann (1:03.78); MacCarty (1:11.15); Lesmes (1:19.87); and Jeff Stroup (1:20.85).

Carson went one-two in the 100 backstroke with Costella (1:04.56) and Kyle McAfee (1:10.37) and also went one-two in the 100 fly with McAfee, who won, and Adrian Zeh, who placed second.

In diving, Brent Server won and Ash Dauenhauer took second for the Senators.
