Officials to unveil options for Bordewich addition

Except for slight variations, plans are nearly complete for the addition to Bordewich-Bray Elementary School.

The addition will join the square, two-story building with a more modern, sloped-roof one.

"Two totally different buildings are being brought together as one with this addition," said Mike Mitchell, director of operations for the Carson City School District. "It's a wonderful blend of architecture."

Preliminary plans will be presented to school board members at a meeting at the district office Tuesday evening.

Mitchell said the actual design could go two ways.

One variation features a long corridor lined with rooms. It is cheaper to build, but isn't very attractive, and much of the space is a hallway.

The more costly variation is a shorter corridor with a cluster of rooms around it and a center common area, which can serve as a gathering place.

Mitchell said the latter would be more expensive but a more efficient use of space.

"It's easier for kids to negotiate from class to class," he added.

Either way, he said, the consolidation into one building will be much more convenient than the current six-building campus.

"Kids will no longer have to go outside to fulfill their educational pursuits," he said. "It's all within one building, and that was one of our primary goals from the beginning."

Work should begin on the addition when students are dismissed for summer break in June.

The addition will replace five modular buildings torn down June 21 because of toxic mold. A $3.75 million bond passed in November will pay for construction.
