CARSON RIVERS, CALIF: Open on Saturday. Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station at Woodfords (530-694-2930) checked in and said, "Alpine County will be planting both the West Carson and the East Carson on Thursday with a load of nice rainbows from that private hatchery near Susanville.

In addition, Fish and Game will also be planting both rivers.

Their schedule calls for the same number of plants in 2003 as in 2002.

Green Power Bait seems to be working the best. All of the campgrounds with the exception of Big Cove should be open by Friday.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR. CALIF: Dave Kirby said, "It's partly rain and partly snow, right now (Monday morning). And, it is not going to be a positive week based on the weather forecast.

The big news here is that, on Friday, Ron Grant of Carson City caught a 7-pound, 4-ounce rainbow while fishing with a gold and silver Kastmaster lure.

He and his wife also caught a couple of other trout, but nothing the size of that big one.

They are putting water from the West Carson River into the reservoir and hope to raise the water level by about 18 feet by this summer."

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Andy Moore of Carson City reported that the fishing is "Red Hot." He and his two fishing partners caught and released a large number of cutthroat trout (many in the slot limit of 19-24 inches) on Saturday. They were trolling in the area by "The Needles" with flatfish lures. Moore said that the lake was rough early in the morning and then quickly settled down.

SACRAMENTO RIVER. CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing in Redding (800-670-4448) said:

Redding to Anderson: Flows at 5,500 C.F.S. Rainbow trout fishing is fair to good with 8-20 fish per day. Using spinning gear with Glo-Bugs. Fly fishing with Nymphs, PT Nos. 14 & 16, and egg pattern flies. Watch for fishing to be looking up as the bug hatches will be great as warm Spring weather approaches. Rain showers off and on this week might make things a little wet, just bring light rain gear.

SILVER LAKE, CALIF: No report.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero said water is clear. Fishing for rainbow trout and landlocked kings is turning up, as warm weather has arrived. You'll have to bring rain gear, as they are calling for showers on and off this week. Using Rapala and Rebel lures. Watch for fishing to improve as Shad appear in large schools.

LAKE TAHOE -- North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "The fishing is very good for average-sized Mackinaw trout, early in the morning, when we can get out between storms.

Some of the larger Macks are going up to 7-8 pounds. I've been tagging and releasing the smaller ones.

We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach.

We are using silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."

LAKE TAHOE -- North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said, "When I can get out, the Mackinaw fishing is excellent at Dollar Point, Cal-Neva Point and Carnelian Bay.

We've been trolling 200-280 feet deep with large, silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.

The Macks are running 3-7 pounds. The bigger ones have been up to 10 pounds.

LAKE TAHOE -- South Shore: No report.

LAKE TAHOE -- East Shore: Gene St. Denis said: "The usual report. When the weather lets you get out on the lake, we are catching Macks in the 2-5 pound class on the Cave Rock Shelf.

We have been trolling 180-260 feet deep with silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.

Jigging has also been successful with white, Crippled Herring jigs, tipped with a live minnow.

Toplining has also improved for rainbows between Logan Shoals and Zephyr Cove with No. 9 or No. 11 Sliver/black Rapala lures at a depth of 20-30 feet."

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported: "It's raining right now (Monday morning).

The fishing has been good, especially for the shore fishermen. They have been catching limits of rainbows (16 inches and about 2 pounds) on nightcrawlers.

The trolling has slowed down. The boaters are averaging about 3-4 fish per boat. They are doing best with sliver flasher blades and nightcrawlers for rainbows, up to about 1.5 pounds.

We are not doing anything special for the Opening Weekend due to the big chili cook-off at the Topaz Lodge."

There is no snow around the reservoir and the fishing is absolutely excellent. The water level has come up about 4 feet from our recent storms. It is up to the spillway on the old dam.

Tell your readers that we are now offering four-wheeling, tent camping and brook trout fishing in a number of small creeks on private land, north of Maggie Summit. It's located about 15-18 miles from Wildhorse."
