The Dayton boys basketball team remained among the leaders in the Northern 3A league with a 56-35 win over Fernley on Wednesday.
Dayton (12-7) improved to 7-2 in league play. Dayton held Fernley to a total of 12 points in the second and third quarters, then stepped up its offense in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Vaqueros 24-12.
"I'm real happy with our defensive effort," Dayton coach Rob Streeter said.
Four Dayton players scored in double figures. Matt Bowman hit three three-pointers on his way to scoring 13 points, Jake Deen and Brian Lahmann each had 11 points and Justin Harris added 10 points.
Harris scored eight of his 10 points in the third quarter as Dayton outscored Fernley 12-7 to take a 32-23 lead.
MANOGUE 65, YERINGTON BOYS 57
Yerington gave Manogue all it could handle before falling to 3-5 in league play. The Lions are still in strong position to finish in the top six and advance to the zone playoffs.
"That's our goal, to get in the top six and then anything can happen it looks like in this league," Yerington coach Daron Wildermuth said.
Manogue outscored Yerington 20-11 in the third quarter to take a 49-38 lead, but Yerington fought back to cut the deficit to 59-55 with 1:30 left. The Lions had two chances to cut the deficit further before Manogue put the game away from the foul line.
"It was a great ball game," Wildermuth said.
Wes Thomas scored 21 points, Del Conway had 17 points and Heimy Olvera added 11 points for Yerington.
DAYTON GIRLS 57, FERNLEY 43
Bridgette Galles had 20 points and five rebounds, Amanda Sbragia had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, Jessica Cantwell had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists and Christy Fox added eight points for Dayton (4-4 in league play). Kailauni Harry scored 16 points and Walita Cuerta added 10 points for Fernley.
