The Dayton High boys basketball team jumped out to a 27-12 lead after the first quarter and maintained control throughout in improving to 8-0 in the Northern 3A with a 70-57 win over Fernley on Saturday.
Jordan Stokes scored 21 points and Shane Castro had 17 points as nine players scored for Dayton.
"Obviously I don't like to give up 57 points to anybody, but I think it was real good at times," said Dayton coach T.W. Cunningham about his team's effort. "We've just go to work on being more consistent."
YERINGTON BOYS 69, INCLINE 53
A day after letting a huge win slip away at Sparks, the Lions rebounded to break a four-game losing streak against Incline at home. Yerington trailed 34-33 at halftime, but outscored Incline 22-7 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
The Lions were coming off a 56-52 loss on Friday at second place Sparks against a team that is 8-1 in league and trails just Dayton in the standings. Yerington led by nine points with three-and-a-half minutes left before Sparks began hitting three-pointers to mount its comeback.
"We're getting back on track hopefully," Yerington coach Daron Wildermuth said. "Sparks is obviously a talented team. We needed a win."
Jeremy Means scored 13 points and Ryan Rife and Casey Wildermuth each added 12 points for the Lions (12-5, 5-5).
FERNLEY GIRLS 44, DAYTON 32
April Shaw scored 20 points, Whitney McShane had eight points and Becky Murphy added seven points to help lead Fernley to the win. Dayton shot just 8-of-46 from the floor.
"It makes it tough to win," Dayton coach Shari Andreasen said. "We kept our heads up and played good, aggressive defense. I am very pleased with our effort and heart. The ball will eventually fall for us."
Rebecca Monzello scored 13 points and Brittany Hill added 12 points for the Dust Devils.
