Cardinals salvage a tie

The Carson Cardinals baseball team was able to salvage a 14-14 tie against San Mateo, Calif., in a wild ending at the West Coast Classic on Thursday at North Valleys High.

The Cardinals then lost to the Central California Pirates 21-0. The Pirates are an all-star team made up of players from Bakersfield to as far as north of Fresno. The Cardinals finished pool play at 2-2-1.

The Cardinals carried a 14-9 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning against San Mateo. Ryan Henry tripled and Carl Winter picked up his sixth RBI of the game when he singled home Henry to make it 14-9 in the top of the sixth.

But San Mateo was able to tie it in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs before there were any outs. Josh Camper came in and gave up a three-run home run that tied the game and a double.

But Camper went on to settle down, but was the victim of a bad break when the next batter reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout.

With runners at second and third and no outs, Camper got out of the jam on a groundout that was followed by a groundball to shortstop Andrew James who nailed the runner at the plate tryinng to score. Tony Teixeira tagged out the next runner trying to steal home to end the inning. The game was called due to the time limit.

Winter also had a three-run double and a two-run double and Mike Handley belted a two-run home run. James and Cameron Leck each had two hits, a double and scored three runs, Aaron Henry had two hits, including a double, Royal Good had two hits and Teixiera added a hit.

Aaron Henry doubled and Winter added a hit against the Pirates.
