'Two big races scheduled at Champion Motor Speedway Saturday'

Saturday night at Champion Motor Speedway will feature the Travelers RV Sierra Mountain Super Series with the fastest Charter Super Late Models from Northern Nevada taking on the quickest Pro Stocks from Central California in a 125-lap showdown.

The Sierra Mountain Super Series is a six-race challenge between Champion Motor Speedway and the All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif. Reno's Rich Lawlor took home the gold in the inaugural event May 10 and hopes to make it two in a row.

Also on tap is the Travelers RV Western Modified Shootout featuring the quickest Western (IMCA type) Modifieds from 11 western states in a 50-lap showdown. The winner will take home $1,500, minimum 25-car count.

Event sponsor Dana Bailey of Travelers RV decided since the 1/3-mile asphalt oval can only accommodate 22 cars for the main event, the required number of cars should be 25 not 35. If necessary, a B-main qualifier will be run to determine the final two transfer positions.

Just added to the evening's activities is a special benefit for Christina Hollahan, the young lady from Carson City who's home burned Sunday. She lost everything she owned. Hollahan has ties to Champion Motor Speedway as she works at the beer garden on Saturday nights.

Saturday's trophy dash winners will hustle through the grandstands (and pits) with helmets in hand to raise money for Christina.

"This special double bill should produce one of the most exciting nights of racing action ever held in Northern Nevada," said CMS general manager Jeb Onweiler.

Hollahan along with co-pilot Chris Wyatt won the Mad Mutha-in-law race May 31 at CMS and donated the $600 prize to the drivers fund.

"How ironic that CMS can step up and help someone who just a few weeks ago showed such remarkable generosity to the racers," said Onweiler. "So as often happens in motorsports, when someone is in need, people step up to the pump and help out.

"We're trying our best to bump start the new series and hosting an event of this stature will help tremendously. I also hope our racers and fans bring a few extra bucks this weekend so we can help Christina get back on her feet. She really needs our help right now."

Also on the dance card: Les Schwab Street Stocks, Hustlin' Hornets and the Ponderosa Stamp & Engraving kids bicycle races.

All five Thunder Theater locations will present live ASA stockcar action from Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in Mansfield, Ohio and IHRA ACDelco Nationals top fuel and pro modified drag racing from Richmond, Va.

Pits open at 2 p.m., front gates open at 5 and the show starts at 7. Adults are $11, seniors and military are $9, teens 13-18 are $6, juniors 6-12 are $4, kids 5-younger are free as is event parking.
