Salvation Army seeking a few good turkeys

The Salvation Army is in need of donated turkeys - fresh or frozen - to assist several agencies for Thanksgiving.

From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, a Model Dairy refrigeration truck will be parked at Mike's Pharmacy, 1007 N. Curry St., to receive and hold the turkeys until they are distributed.

"We'll be helping quite a few people this year," said Vi Bibee, social worker at the Carson City Salvation Army.

"We will share them with other agencies like FISH, Lyon County Parks and Recreation and Lyon County Social Services, Storey County Food Closet, Carson Valley Food Closet, China Spring and Aurora Pines youth camps, and the Washoe Tribe."

Salvation Army Major Charles Norris said KOH Radio will have a live remote during drop-off hours. Turkeys may also be left at The Salvation Army Church at 661 Colorado St.

"Lyon County needs lots of help They no longer have the Dayton Food Bank," Bibee said. "We collected about 800 turkeys last year."

Beginning Saturday, the familiar red kettles will be at several area stores for monetary donations.

The Carson High School ROTC program and Carson City Kiwanis are the first organizations volunteering to help man the kettles.

"We can always use volunteers," Norris said. "We're open for almost anything at this point, for volunteers."

Norris said volunteers can work in shifts, or, a business can volunteer to take the kettle for a whole day, and split the shifts between the employees.

"They can take it for a full day, one week, or one day for the season," he said.

"For individual volunteers, we'd like them to take the shift for at least four hours, otherwise we're making a lot of changes."

Shifts are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and kettles will be located at most grocery and department stores. Norris said organizations can challenge each other to man the kettles.

"There is usual competition between service clubs," Norris said. "We're still new and need to get acquainted with the community. But if one group would like challenge another, that's OK."

Norris and his wife, Diana, took over as pastors/directors of the Carson City Salvation Army in July.
