Brewery offers new fall classes

The Brewery Arts Center is offering 15 classes for fall, from belly dancing and yoga to traditional hooked rug making and stained glass.

Now that summer is over and the kids are back in school it's a good time for moms to take a break and be creative, said the BAC's facility director Ann Suter.

Offered for the first time are a one-day beading workshop, the rug making class taught by fourth generation rug hooker Polly Clark and a decorative paper crafts class called "Paper Alive" taught by Carol Foldvary-Anderson.

"It's quite a craft," said Suter of Foldvary-Anderson's paper creations. "They're sculptures, actually." The paper class will be held Wednesdays from October 15 through November 19.

In her rug making, Clark pulls 100-percent wool flannel strips through burlap or linen with a hook. Clark, who is certified in her trade, wants to emphasize that this is not latch hooking. "It's like painting with wool," she said. Her work has been displayed in the Carson City Library and currently there are large and small pieces for viewing in the BAC Artisan's store.

The one-day only beading workshop will be taught by Jill Atkins on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Each student in the class will be making a bracelet. Atkins has had numerous shows of her work and won many awards. For information see her Web site at jillatkinsdesigns.com.

The fall stained glass class will be taught by Sandy Hartley of South Lake Tahoe who has been working in the medium for more than 30 years. Students will be making a colorful finished piece holding pieces of glass together with the copper foil solder.

"It ends up being kind of like a puzzle where you have to fit pieces together," Hartley said. The class is a great chance to create a wonderful gift or home decor item, she said. For information on her class, call (530) 544-2935.

The first classes to get underway for the fall series, watercolor painting classes for both adults and children, start on Tuesday and run weekly through Nov. 4. They are taught by professional painter Ginger Rose.

"She has kind of a following," Suter said. "She's had showings in the State Library and she's won a lot of prizes."

Other popular classes are the ceramics and pottery classes taught by Keith Woodruff and John Rotheram on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

"And teen pottery is something we used to have that we're trying to bring back," Suter said.

In addition, a knitting class will be held on Tuesdays starting Oct. 28; a calligraphy class on Wednesdays starting Oct. 15 and a children's drawing class will be held Wednesdays -- also starting Oct. 15.

After the Nevada Day Parade on Nov. 1, BAC workshop instructors will be doing demonstrations of their craft.

"People will be able to come by and try their hand at different things," Suter said.
