Cross Country Cup set for Friday

Here's a tip for anyone who is entered in the Cross Country Cup for the first time and has never seen the course - just look at the t-shirt. The logo shows a cowboy riding a brahma bull.

"That's kind of indicative of what the course is like," race director Dennis Brinson said with a laugh.

The seventh annual Cross Country Cup, an event that lives up to its name, will be held Saturday at Western Nevada Community College. The 5- and 10-kilometer courses will test runners and walkers alike with a variety of hills and sand.

Difficult, yet fun, according to Brinson.

"It's a cross country course, pretty much mostly on dirt, over hill and over dale," Brinson said. "Even though it's a tough race, I think a lot of people are drawn to it because they feel like they've accomplished something when they're done."

All races will begin at 8 a.m. and registration will be held from 7 to 7:45 a.m. in front of WNCC.

Runners will receive refreshments and a post-race drawing will also be held, and of course that cowboy t-shirt. Race day registration will cost $25.

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Sierra Flyers age group running club and the Carson High School cross country program. Brinson serves as head coach of both programs.

First, second and third place awards will be given to each division in the 5K and 10K runs. First, second and third place awards will be given to the top overall finishers in the men's and women's 5K walk.
