Carson wrestling takes second

Nine out of 14 wrestlers placed for the Carson High wrestling team as the Senators took second at the tough James Riddle Memorial Classic in Oakdale, Calif., near Modesto.

California state power Golden Valley of Merced was able to edge Carson for the title in the 25-team tournament Golden Valley finished with 226.5 points while the Senators had 199 points.

"With a few more matches going our way the outcome could have been a little different," Carson assistant coach Dave Lowe said. "But for the most part our guys wrestled as well as they could."

While Carson won no individual crowns, two wrestlers took second - Robbie Bozin at 119 pounds and Micah Whitcome at 152. Whitcome lost in the finals by one point. "He just wrestled real tough," Lowe said.

Bozin lost 10-5 in the finals. "Bozin was just real tough all the way through," Lowe said.

Four wrestlers took third: Travis Lamborn (160), Jason Klug (heavyweight), Kevin Riggin (135) and Owen Craugh (103). Another highlight came when Jonas Schenzel pulled out his final match at the end in an 8-6 win to take fifth at 189. Aaron Osheroff was seventh at 145 as well for the Senators.

While Carson's other five wrestlers didn't play, they all wrestled well. Freshman Kelly Manning just missed placing after going 2-2 at 130 and freshman Aaron Jolcover was 1-2 at 140.

Despite giving up more than 10 pounds, Loren Wooldridge wrestled well at 171. Todd Banko also wrestled well at 112 and Kyle Banko wrestled well at 125 for Carson.
