Carson boys hoops falls to Wooster

The Carson High boys basketball team was on the verge of pulling off a huge comeback when a cruel twist of fate stopped its momentum.

Wooster went on to beat Carson 64-51 on Saturday in Reno in a game in which the Senators pulled to within two points with one minute, 50 seconds left.

That's when Rory Wunsch appeared to have drawn a charge and was knocked unconsious in the process. Wunsch was able to rise and go to the bench and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. To add insult to injury, Wunsch was called for a block and Wooster went on to put the game away. "It was a physical game," Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said.

Despite the loss, Carson remains in position to make the Northern 4A playoffs. The Senators are in fourth in the Sierra League and would make the playoffs if they can hold onto fourth.

Wooster is 4-6 and while the Senators finish with the league's top two teams, Reno at home on Tuesday and at Douglas on Friday, the Colts also finish on the road at Douglas and Reno.

The Colts led Carson 30-16 at halftime. "Give credit to Wooster," Mendeguia said. "They came out and played with a sense of urgency. They just went right at us, took it right to us. They flew around. We didn't respond in the first half."

Wunsch hit three three-pointers on his way to scoring 15 points and Kyle Bacon added eight points for Carson.
