Benson to run down under

Carson High junior Amanda Benson will be heading down under this summer to compete in an international competition.

Benson has been invited to compete in track at the Down Under Games to be held in Sydney, Australia. Benson was one of 12 Nevada athletes to be invited to the event.

The competition will feature athletes from the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Benson will travel to Australia from July 3-15 in which she will spend much of her time training. The competition will be held July 13 and 14.

Benson runs cross country and track at Carson High and also works part-time at Bodines. She hopes to compete in the heptathlon at the event. Benson plans to compete in the heptathlon in college.

The heptathlon consists of the 100-meter hurdles, 200, 800, long jump, high jump, shot put and javelin. Other possibilities for Benson at the Down Under Games is to compete in the 1,600 relay, 400 and 800.

The trip will cost Benson $3,300. Those wishing to make donations can call Benson, 841-5395.
