Mercer picks up two-run hit in win

Brett Hayes' grand slam home run capped a nine-run second inning for the University of Nevada's baseball team in its 13-0 win over BYU on Friday in the Pepperdine Invitational at Malibu, Calif.

Carson High graduate Joe Mercer also had a 2-run single as a pinch hitter during Nevada's three-run sixth inning that finished the scoring. Mercer is now 2-for-7 on the season.

Travis Sutton (3-1) pitched a complete game, five-hit shutout over seven innings in the game that was called after 61Ú2 innings.

Chris Gimenez singled and Brett Hayes and Bub Madrid were both hit by pitches to begin Nevada's rally in the second. Then after two batters were retired, Brian Gazerro hit a two-run single and Robert Marcial followed with a three-run home run.

Jacob Butler singled, Ben Mummy walked and Gimenez was hit by a pitch. Hayes followed with his grand slam.

Nevada added a run in the fourth in Hayes' RBI single. In the sixth, Madrid had an RBI single and Mercer capped the scoring with his two-run single.

Hayes went 3-for-3 with five RBI. The Wolf Pack will continue play in the event at 2 p.m. today against Pepperdine.
