Carson swimmers sweep Douglas

The Carson High girls swim team won all but two events to beat arch rival Douglas 161-131 on Friday.

Carson's boys also had just enough depth to hold off Douglas for a 136-132 win. Carson's girls would have won all but one event, but the Senators A relay team was disqualified in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Senators did win the 200 medley relay as Sarah-Jo Metcalf, Hilary Schlager, Jessica Goddard and Rebekah Niehoff won in two minutes. 5.08 seconds. Goddard and Danielle Judge also went one-two in the 200 individual medley with Goddard winning in 2:33.21 and Judge finishing in 2:39.15.

Niehoff won the 200 free (2:04.82) and the 100 butterfly (1:08.62). Goddard took second in the 100 fly (1:09.28). In the 50 free, Katie Wandel won in 26.59 and Schlager took second in 27.29.

Wandel also won the 100 free (1:00.20) while Metcalf took second in 1:03.32. Lauren Metcalf won the 500 free in 5:25.11 and she also was part of the winning 200 free relay along with Wandel, Judge and Perkins as they finished in 1:52.84.

In addition, Schlager won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.51) and Sarah-Jo Metcalf and Perkins took seond and third in the 100 backstroke.

For the boys, Kiel Costella, Jeff Stroup, Jake Oxoby and John Wandel won the 200 medley relay in 1:50.32. Costella also won the 200 I.M. in 2:08.15 and led a one-two-three sweep in the 500 free. He finished in 5:45.04, Andrew Cardinal finished in 5:55.77 and Ian Murdock took third.

Wandel won the 200 free in 1:56.11 while Stroup took second in 2:04.11. Douglas High's Andy Sturgess, one of the top returning swimmers in the state, won the 50 free in 23.28. Oxoby took second (25.20) and Kellen Dale was third (25.27).

Sturgess also won the 100 free in 51.14. Cardinal was second (55.9) and Dale was third (1:02.4). Oxoby won the 100 fly (1:00.71).

Stroup, Dale, Alex Updegrove and Cardinal won the 200 free relay (1:46.10). In the 100 backstroke, the Tigers' Trevor Schaff edged Wandel (59.4-59.65) while Murdock took third. The Tigers' Justin White also edged Wandel in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.22-1:12.66).

Thanks to the effort of Sturgess, Douglas also edged Carson in the 400 free relay. The race was tied going into the ancho leg where Sturgess pulled away in the last 25 yards. Douglas finished in 3:32.33 while Carson finished in 3:33.20.

Not including diving, Carson outscored Douglas 136-109. Carson has no divers so Douglas swept in diving.
