Carson City's Shawn Stainbrook was the only athlete from Nevada to qualify for the Special Olympic World Games after having an outstanding day in cross country skiing in the Nevada State Special Olympics recently held at Kirkwood.

Stainbrook won three gold medals and one bronze and qualified for the world games to be held later this year in Japan. Stainbrook also played for Carson City's basketball team that placed second in the Nevada State Special Olympics on Saturday in Reno. Athletes from Nevada and Northern California competed in the games.

Also on that team were T.J. Watson, Aaron Glass, Janis Kattenhorn, David Sorensen, Jamie Alexander, Nick DeNardo, Mike LaBracque and Ginger Lenox. Washoe County won the title.

Another Carson City basketball team placed third in its division behind Salinas, Calif., and Lassen, Calif. On that team were Thoenicia Alcorn, Mandy Brown, Greg Cowen, Mel Garland, Grant Wagner, Colleen Stainbrook, Joanne Smith and Colleen Rather.
