MINDEN - It might not have been pretty, but the Douglas softball team found ways to sweep a Sierra League doubleheader away from North Valleys Saturday at Lady Tiger Field in Northern 4A action.

Kayla Dunn (2-1) struck out seven and walked only two to pick up a complete-game 7-5 victory in game one while the defense committed five errors.

"It wasn't that they were hard plays (on the committed errors), just routine ground balls," Douglas head coach Todd Wilcks said. "We just didn't do a very good job defensively."

The Douglas offensive, however, managed to carry the team through to victory despite leaving 11 runners on base.

Stevie Smith drove in three runs, catcher Valerie Smith went 3-for-3 and Kaycee Wilcks and Brittany Puzey each scored two runs for the Tigers (6-3 overall, 3-0 Sierra League). Puzey also had a double in the first game.

With the game tied at three in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers broke things open with a four-run inning.

Kaycee Wilcks singled and stole second. Kristy Olsen reached on an error that scored Wilcks. Olsen stole second and Puzey sacrificed her over to third.

Dunn then walked and Olsen scored on a passed ball to Valerie Smith.

Smith singled, moving Dunn to third and Dunn scored on a Stevie Smith single. Jessie Kizer reached on an error and Missy Kaplan walked to bring Valerie Smith home.

North Valleys added two runs in the seventh before Dunn shut the door.

In game two, Douglas beat the Panthers 6-1.

Puzey picked up the win, despite hurting her wrist after the third inning.

The severity of the injury was unknown at press time.

Kellei Kizer closed out the remainder of the game to pick up the long save.
