Effective Nov. 1, 2004, the length limit for a Lahontan cutthroat trout caught at Pyramid Lake changed from total length to fork length.

"Fork Length" means the length of any fish, measured in a straight line from the tip of the snout to the fork of the tail.

The rationale for the change is:

a. Fork length simplifies enforcement because it cannot be manipulated by spreading or squeezing of the tail.

b. It would eliminate controversy about size measurement during fishing tournaments.

c. It is commonly used in science and has been used at the Creel Census Station for many years.
