Galena, Douglas spikers get big wins

Jenny Burrows, Michelle Drury, Lydia Mailander and Chelsea Appelbaum all had huge defensive efforts as the Galena volleyball team pulled out a comeback win over Fallon on Thursday in a battle between the High Desert League's top two teams.


Galena came back to win 25-16, 222-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-8. The Grizzlies (32-5) improved to 10-0 in league while Fallon (20-5) fell to 8-2, with its two losses coming to Galena.


Burrows and Drury each had 20 digs, Mailander had 16 digs and Appelbaum added 15 digs. Burrows also had 13 kills and nine blocks, Mailander had 12 kills and Appelbaum and Drury each added nine kills.


Kate Wallace had 39 assists and three blocks, Appelbaum, Kelly Drury and Lydia and Julia Mailander all had two aces and Lydia Mailander added four blocks for Galena.


DOUGLAS 3, SOUTH TAHOE 1


The Douglas High girls volleyball team picked up a huge win in the Sierra League race and gained an inside track on picking up the Sierra League's No. 1 seed in the Northern 4A playoffs. Douglas improved to 7-1 to take over first in league play while South Tahoe fell to 7-2. Monica Knight led the attack and Katy Marsh set up the attack to help lead Douglas.


DAYTON 3, GALENA 0


The Dayton High volleyball team maintained its hold of first place in the Northern 3A, improving to 11-2 with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-17 win.


Amanda Sbragia had 14 kills, one block and six digs, Michelle Bowman had 14 assists, six kills, one ace and two digs, Macy Hamlin had seven aces, two kills and two assists, Gina Henderson had five kills and seven assists, Rachel Studebaker had three digs and one kill, Toni May had two kills, Kristin Wetzel had four digs, Sara Simmons had three aces and two kills and Melony Cox had four kills for the Dust Devils.


Dayton won the junior varsity match 27-25, 25-19, but lost the freshmen contest 26-24, 24-26, 8-15.
