The Carson High golf team got off to a solid start in its first Sierra League Tournament on Thursday at Northgate Golf Course.

Carson placed third with a score of 558, one stroke behind South Tahoe, which finished at 557. Reno won the event with a 521. The top four teams from the Sierra League in the final regular season standings advance to the zone tournament. Another highlight for Carson was Liz Rankl, who shot a 97 to place fourth in the event.

CHS coach Terry Gingell was pleased with his team's play on the tough Northgate course in difficult windy conditions.

"It was a very tough day," Gingell said. "The wind was blowing. The greens were really tough."

"It's pretty long and there's a lot of sagebrush and a lot of blind shots," Gingell also said about the course. It's not an easy course for them to play.

Even though Rankl finished fourth, Gingell said she wasn't pleased with her round. "She was a bit disappointed," he said. She had a few holes that ruined her round. She felt she could have done better."

Also for Carson, Grace Ray shot a 110, Samantha Wang had a 113, Michelle Kop fired a 115, Lydia Peri had a 123 and Sarah Metcalf had a 134.

"We played well and we think we can make progress and we're looking forward to our next tournament," Gingell said. "Really I thought it was a very good start to our season."
