Carson sweeps S. Tahoe

Now that's more like it.

After an embarrassing week in which the Carson High baseball team was routed by McQueen on Tuesday and then suffered its first ever loss to South Tahoe on Thursday.

But the Senators restored order on Saturday by sweeping the Vikings at Ron McNutt Field, winning the opener 15-4 and the nightcap 12-0. Carson banged out 16 hits in the first game and 27 hits in the doubleheader while receiving strong outings on the mound from Jack Jacquet and Kyle Mandoki. Logan Parsley was among the leading hitters with six hits in the doubleheader.

The sweep was important because it provided Carson (19-4, 8-1) some breathing room in the Sierra League race for the Northern 4A playoffs.

"It was imperative that we swept and it was imperative that we came out and swept the way we did," Carson coach Steve Cook said.

Jacquet didn't allow a hit going into the fifth inning and ended up allowing three earned runs while striking out seven through six innings in his complete game effort. Carson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first when Kevin Schlange and Parsley each singled. Adam Anderson then hit an RBI double and Murph Gardner followed with a two-run single.

Carson broke the game open with six runs in the second to take a 9-0 lead. Jeremiah Teeter and Royal Good both singled, Parsley, Anderson and Gardner all had RBI singles and Derek Shoaf hit an RBI sacrifice fly during the rally.

The Senators made it 10-0 in the third when Brooks Greenlee singled and scored on Teeter's single.

The game almost came to an end in the fifth when Jacquet induced a groundball that looked like it was going to be a game-ending double play. But the Vikings scored on an overthrow on the play.

South Tahoe had runners at second and third with one out after scoring the run, but Jacquet prevented any more damage with a strikeout and then received an outstanding defensive play from Schlange at shortstop. Schlange went deep into the hole to back hand a groundball and made the long throw to first for the final out.

Carson scored five runs in the sixth to take a 15-1 lead. Greenlee singled and Sean Costella perfectly executed a hit and run single to give the Senators runners at first and third. Teeter's RBI double and Parsley's two-run double made it 14-1. T.J. Hein settled for an RBI sacrifice fly to finish Carson's scoring when the left fielder made a leaping catch against the fence to rob him of an extra base hit.

Parsley and Teeter each had three hits, Schlange, Greenlee, Gardner and Anderson all had two hits and Shoaf added two RBI.

In the nightcap, Mandoki took a no-hitter into the sixth and settled for a two-hit shutout after allowing two hits in the sixth before the game ended due to the 10-run rule. "Jack and Kyle threw tremendous," Cook said. "They both had no hitters going deep."

Carson again jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, with Parsley's two-run double the big blow in the rally. The Senators took a 7-0 lead in the second on the strength of Good's two-run home run and Parsley's RBI triple.

Schlange's RBI single made it 8-0 in the third. Carson scored four runs in the sixth to take a 12-0 lead on the strength of Gardner's two-run double and Costella's RBI single.

Cook said his team had "the drive and enthusiasm to be there that wasn't there" in the team's previous two losses.

"This is the team that I and the coaches saw the first 19 games of the year," Cook said. "We came out in the right frame of mind.

"We came out and played the way we could. We played well. We were excited to be at the ballpark again."

Parsley and Schlange each had three hits, Good had two hits and Anderson doubled for Carson.

"We were up," Parsley said. "We weren't just like coming out here just to play baseball. We were excited to play baseball."

Carson notes: Carson will host Manogue at 5 p.m. Tuesday on Merk Human Night. All proceeds from the gate and snack bar on Tuesday will go to the Merk Human Scholarship fund for CHS senior baseball players. The scholarship is named in honor of the longtime CHS baseball supporter, who died in 2001.

CARSON JVS SWEEP

The Carson junior varsity baseball team (6-3 in league) swept South Tahoe, winning the opener 7-6 and the nightcap 12-2 in five innings.

In the opener Drew Good, Markus Adams and Rob Valerius all went 2-for-4 with an RBI, David Eller and Steve Myers each had a hit and Cody Bone went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Valerius was the winning pitcher, going six innings. Ed Lovelace pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out the side for the save.

In the nightcap, Eller pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out eight. Good and Valerius were each 2-for-4 with an RBI, Adams went 2-for-4 went an RBI and three runs, Eller had two doubles and three RBI, Bryt Lewis had a triple and an RBI, David Leid went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Lovelace was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Kevin Holloway was 2-for-3 and Myers went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
