Carson baseball sweeps Hug

The Carson High baseball team warmed up for a tough week ahead by sweeping a doubleheader at Hug on Saturday.

Carson won the opener 20-2 and the nightcap 19-0. In the opener, Carson scored five runs in the first inning, one each in the second and third, six in the fourth and seven in the fifth.

In the first, Jeremiah Teeter singled and Brooks Greenlee had an RBI single to highlight the rally. In the second, Tony Fagan had an RBi single and Royal Good hit a solo home run in the third.

In the fourth, Bryt Lewis tripled, Jack Maloney had an RBI single, Johnny Hazeltine and Greenlee both had RBI doubles and Josh Caron and Markus Adams both hit RBI singles.

In the fifth, Maloney single, Hazeltine had an RBI single and Fagan hit an grand slam home run. T.J. Hein doubled, Rob Valerius followed with an RBI single and Maloney had an RBI single.

Fagan went 2-for-2 with five RBI, Greenlee was 2-for-2 with four runs, Maloney and Hazeltine each had three hits and Adams and Caron each added two hits.

Winning pitcher Jack Jacquet pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing one hit. Fagan pitched the last two innings, striking out six.

Jacquet hit two two-run homers and Kevin Schlange also homered twice in the nightcap, belting a solo shot and a grand slam. Carson scored three in the first, two in the third, two in the fourth and 12 in the fifth.

Schlange hit his solo shot and Jacquet hit a two-run shot in the first. T.J. Hein had an RBI double in the third. In the fourth, after Logan Parsley singled, Jacquet hit another two-run shot.

In the fifth, Sean Costella and Joe Skates singled, Parsley walked, Caron and Nick Smallman were both hit by a pitch to force in runs, Hazeltine had an RBI single, Hein walked, Costella and Adams were both hit by a pitch and Schlange followed with his grand slam. After Parsley was hit by a pitch, Caron hit a two-run shot.

Kyle Mandoki pitched three innings for the win, striking out six while allowing two hits. Valerius pitched the last two innings, allowing one hit.

"I was happy with where we're at," Carson coach Steve Cook said. "We played the way we had to play. We did what we had to do.

"Our pitchers did a really good job of controlling the pace of the game. Everybody who came in did a good job. We played good baseball."

Carson (7-1, 5-1 in the Sierra League) will play two of the more impressive Northern 4A teams in the early season this week. The Senators will host McQueen in a nonleague game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Ron McNutt Field and then will return to league with a three-game series against Damonte Ranch that will begin on Thursday at Damonte.
