The state Commission on Ethics hired Kristin Luis on Wednesday as its new legal counsel.

Luis is a senior deputy district attorney in Carson City District Attorney's Office where she has worked for five-and-a-half years in the criminal division. Prior to that she was in private practice in Reno.

She replaces Nancy Lee Varnum who resigned in May. The job pays $85,000 a year.

Stacy Jennings, executive director of the commission, said Luis's experience as a prosecutor will be valuable to the commission.

Luis has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Nevada. Her law degree is from Gonzaga University Law School.

She will begin work the first week in September.
