Julius A. "Whitey" Bachman, 81, a Minden resident for the past 12 years, died Dec. 1, 2005, at his home. He was born April 5, 1924, in Bridgeport, Conn., to Esther and Julius Bachman.
Before moving to Minden, he lived in Albany, Calif., for 50 years.
He married Adele Jungnickel in Albany in March 1945.
Mr. Bachman retired from the auto parts business in the San Francisco Bay area after 50 years. He was a member of the Albany Police Reserves for 25 years, the square dance exhibition group, Squarenaders, for 30 years and the Motivators Square Dance Club of Reno for more than 10 years. He was assistant cubmaster for Cub Pack 7 of Albany and assistant scoutmaster for Troop 19 of Berkeley for many years along with the Mount Diablo Boy Scout Council of California. Four of his sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
He was an avid fisherman, woodworker, artist and traveler. He enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting games.
He enjoyed hiking in the Desolation Wilderness and near Lake Tahoe and water-skiing on the lake. He loved animals and was a regular at the Carson Valley Swim Center.
He joined the U.S. Navy in October 1942 and served at various Naval bases throughout the United States and on the USS Vincennes in the South Pacific. He was discharged Jan. 1, 1946, in Bremerton, Wash., and received the Asiatic-Pacific area campaign medal, the good conduct medal, American area campaign medal, World War II victory medal and the Ruptured Duck.
He was preceded in death by his son Gregg and sister Dorothy Graham.
Among his survivors are his wife; sons Kenneth, Mark and Todd; daughter, Alain Mozley; daughters-in-law Lana, Sharon and Terry and son-in-law Christopher Mozley, all of the Carson Valley-Lake Tahoe area; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Jay Bachman, Courtney Everhart, Alana Mozley, Austin Bachman, Ethan Bachman and Michael Bachman; twin sister, Lee Nielson of Monterey, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Nelson and Peggy of South Lake Tahoe; and extended-family members.

A day of celebration will be in the spring.
