Public comments sought on changes to city's streets plan

The Carson City freeway is the most important. But what other streets need improvement?

That's what city transportation planners want to know.

Their revised plans continue to say completion of the Carson City Freeway is the region's "most critical long-range transportation need."

It also details how Carson City and surrounding communities, an area of more than 58,400 people, will address transportation through the year 2025.

Among the highest priority projects - needed now - is the second half of the Carson City freeway.

Included are: design and acquisition for Phase 2 at $32.2 million, construction from Highway 50 East to Fairview Drive for $40 million; and construction of the freeway from Fairview Drive to South Carson Street at $114.2 million, according to the plan.

Other high-priority projects include widening of Roop Street from Winnie Lane to Washington Street; widening of Fairview Drive from Roop Street to the Carson freeway; widening and addition of bicycle lanes to Curry Street from Clearview Drive to Koontz Lane and the additional of a north bound lane on Highway 395 from North Sunridge Drive to Old Clear Creek Road.

Several other projects have been classified as medium or low priority. The most expensive project thought to be needed by 2010 is the proposed Highway 50 interchange at Carson City milepost 3 for more than $7.4 million. And the costliest project that officials believe will be needed by 2015 is $6 million widening of Highway 50 from Saliman Road east to Linehan Road in Mound House.

This update was created on request by Nevada Department of Transportation.

The state agency wanted an update that included updates in the cost for the second half of the Carson City Freeway and how the freeway and Carson City milepost 3 interchange costs have been moved to the 2007 budget from 2006.

It also takes into account the addition of the city's JAC bus service.

The updates will be presented to the Metropolitan Planning Organization and Carson City Regional Transportation Commission at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.
