Last summer it was a benefit stock car race that pitted society's protectors against each other, this summer Carson City's firefighters and deputies will square off in a competition to see who can raise the most tips.

Thursday, the men in blue and their counterparts in green will serve food and drinks and bus tables at Applebee's Restaurant during the lunch and dinner hours between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m.

"We are hoping to out-do the Carson City fire department," said Sheriff's Chief Deputy Steve Schuette.

The firefighters' tips will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the deputies' tips will go to the Nevada Children's Cabinet.

Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The Children's Cabinet is a private, nonprofit corporation which provides a variety of services for children and families in Northern Nevada including child-care subsidies, family counseling, community education, literacy programs, street outreach and youth development.

Along with Carson City, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Sparks fire and police will also participate at the following Applebee's locations: 3300 S. Carson St., Carson City; 4805 Kietzke Lane, Reno; 693 N. McCarran Blvd., Sparks; and 3987 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
