Telephone Pioneers offering two college scholarships

The Pioneers are giving away two $500 scholarships. For details, go to http://pioneers.sbc.com click on Silver State and News on the right side of the page for the application or contact Jan Tufford at 333-2241. The due date for the return of the applications is June 30.

Seniors heading to Jazz Jubilee in July

The Silver Sierra Adventurers will depart July 14-15 for a motorcoach trip to Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee.

The bus will leave at 10 a.m. from the McDonald's Parking lot on North Carson Street at College Parkway.

The approximate return time is 10 p.m. July 15.

Tutors needed to teach English as second tongue

Volunteer tutors are needed to teach basic English to non-English speaking people who want to learn. Tutors offer a one-to-one basis at no cost at a mutually convenient time for both student and tutor. Two days a week for 1-2 hours each are required. Fire Safety, Prevention Day set for Saturday

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will be providing free information to homeowners to help them reduce the threat of wildfire to their homes at Fire Safety and Prevention Day, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, at Carson Valley Home Depot, 920 Jacks Valley Road.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's "Living With Fire" program has produced a number of educational materials, including Living With Fire videos that homeowners can check out and view at home, the "Living With Fire Homeowners Guide," a list of recommended plant choices for defensible space, an evacuation checklist, and a brand new Web site: www.livingwithfire.info

Ed Smith, natural resource specialist with University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, has worked with many local, state and federal firefighters and agencies to develop and distribute information to help Nevadans live more safely with the threat of wildfire. Colleague JoAnne Skelly, Carson City/Storey County Extension educator, has worked with Smith and is also offering free defensible space evaluations to homeowners in Carson City. In addition, Skelly is helping with Carson City's Waterfall fire rehabilitation efforts.

Other groups participating in the Fire Safety and Prevention Day include Fernley Search & Rescue, United Blood Services, Care Flight, Douglas County Police Department, East Fork Fire Department, Nevada Fire Safe Council, and the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators. e-Waste can be recycled in Mound House on Saturday and Sunday

If it has a cord or runs on a battery and isn't a TV it's e-Waste! and can be recycled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the e-Waste Depot (2nd Place) 10128 Highway 50 E., Mound House. Drop off cell phones, coffeepots, computers, ink cartridges and CD players.

Call Michelle Fissori at 246-1779. The e-Waste Drive keeps electronic waste out of area landfills and helps the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Nevada and ComputerCorps.
