Carson City

Annual food drive begins at mortgage company

CTX Mortgage in Carson City is holding its annual Holiday Turkey and Food Drive through Dec. 19 to help the community.

The office is at 1817 Moody St., No. 35 and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The community is welcome to make donations to their office.

Sale this weekend at Children's Museum Gift Shop

All items in the Gift Shop at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada will be 15 percent off today through Sunday. Family memberships purchased as a gift, or for yourself will be 10 percent off for new members only.

Good dogs, bad dogs go to school

Dog-obedience classes are offered to help establish good conduct and curb bad habits for your dog.

Instructor Guy Yeaman uses a light-handed approach to help teach your dog to obey commands such as heel, sit, stay, stand and recall.

Each dog needs a choke chain and a fabric or leather lead. Dogs must be at least 4 months old and current on their shots.

The next session begins Tuesday. Classes are held at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.

Cost for the six-week session is $65.

Learn Reiki healing treatment methods

The Baum Healing Arts Center will hold a free Reiki Share for Reiki practitioners and the public from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at the center, 3107 N. Deer Run Road, Ste. 6.

The group will offer free Reiki healings and share Reiki energy and information during the sessions.

The group is open to any Reiki practitioner from any lineage as well as being open to the public and anyone interested in learning more about Reiki or receiving a healing treatment.

Audubon Society speaker to discuss white pelicans

Lahontan Audubon Society will host Donna Withers, manager of Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, at 7 p.m. tonight in a program introducing and describing Pyramid Lake's Anaho Island NWR.

Withers will also offer a review of the history and status of the American white pelican breeding colony found on the island, one of the largest breeding colonies of American white pelicans in the world. Withers has been the manager of the refuge since 1999. Prior to that, she worked in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species Program.

Social time begins at 7 p.m., and the program at 7:30 p.m. at the South Valleys Library at 15650A Wedge Parkway, off of Mount Rose Highway.

Holiday craft fair this weekend at Inn

The sixth annual Kandy Kane Holiday Craft Fair is today through Sunday at the Carson Valley Inn Shannon Ballroom.

Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

The Northern Nevada Development Authority, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Business Council of Douglas County will meet Wednesday at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden. "Economic Outlook" will be presented by John Mitchell, senior vice president of U.S. Bancorp

Doors open at 7 a.m., breakfast is at 7:30 a.m., and the meeting is at 7:45 a.m.
