A Carson City deputy and a cadet explorer sustained minor injuries in an accident Friday night as they responded with lights and sirens to a call.

Sheriff Kenny Furlong said Deputy Martha Schetter and cadet Scott Paine, 18, were northbound on Silver Sage when a vehicle pulled out in front of them from a stop sign about 7 p.m.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chris Austin, a 17-year-old Carson City teen driving a Toyota Land Cruiser said he didn't see the patrol car when he pulled out from Tuscarora Street to cross the road to Sunwood Drive.

The patrol vehicle struck the Land Cruiser and the impact sent both vehicles into a yard on the corner of Silver Sage and Sunwood Drive.

Dee Saunders, who lives nearby, said she was in her back yard when she heard the police sirens approaching and checked to see where they were coming from.

"I looked up and the Land Cruiser pulled out. I was standing there and was like, 'Oh my God, he's pulling out," she said. "I don't know how he didn't see the cop."

Saunders said she estimated the patrol car at more than 45 mph.

Schetter and Paine were transported to Carson-Tahoe Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries, according to Furlong.

Trooper Austin said the case will be forwarded to the Carson City District Attorney's Office for a review. The teen could be cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

This was the second accident involving a Carson City deputy on Friday.

At 7 a.m. a patrol car struck a vehicle at Roop and Musser Streets. The female civilian driver complained of back injures but was not taken to the hospital. Her vehicle sustained heavy damage.
