Poet reads at Barnes and Noble Saturday

Poet Ellen Hopkins is scheduled to read her work 2 p.m. Saturday at Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Reno, 555 S. Virginia St.

She has published 20 nonfiction books for children on subjects ranging from deep sea exploration to the U.S. military to a five-book series on space.She is the author of two recent releases - "Crank," written in verse, and published by Simon & Schuster in 2004 and "Burned," just hitting bookstores.

The free event is part of Tumblewords, a program of the Nevada Arts Council and the Western States Arts Federation, and is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

St. Teresa of Avila School registration ongoing

Kindergarten through sixth-grade registration has started for St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, 567 S. Richmond Ave. The curriculum follows the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Curriculum and meets Nevada state standards. Free morning supervision is provided and after-school day care is available. Rotary scholarship deadline looming

Carson City Rotary is offering its "Scholarsteps" scholarship, which provides up to $12,000 over four years of study or $3,000 per year. The application deadline is April 28. The scholarship is for a Carson City resident pursuing a degree at Western Nevada Community College and then transferring to the University of Nevada, Reno; the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; or a Nevada state college. The scholarship will be awarded May 20.

Applicants must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better, take at least 12 credit hours per semester and have declared a major or be in a degree program leading to transfer for a baccalaureate degree. For information, call the financial office at WNCC at 445-3264.

Scholarships for bilingual students pursuing health-care careers

The deadline is May 29 for two $25,000 and 75 $2,000 scholarships available for bilingual, bicultural students interested in careers in health care. High school seniors with a grade-point-average of 3.0 who are fluent in both Spanish and English are eligible.

Applicants must show proof of acceptance into a university, community college or an accredited technical college and be enrolled in an approved health care program.

• 6 p.m. May 2 - Key leader discussion regarding assessment of Silver City: Task Force will hold round table discussion with town leaders about assessment results gathered from interviews, surveys, and archival data

• 2-5 p.m. May 14. - Archaeology and historic preservation afternoon with a focus on the Silver City Schoolhouse Archaeology Project. Drop in for refreshments, to view artifacts from the site and to share and record your own memories of the Silver City Schoolhouse. Rare or out of print books owned by residents of the Comstock will also be offered for sale (late 1800s and early 1900s).

• 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 20 - Great Highway 50 Celebration in Mound House: Silver City Task Force will host a booth selling rare and out-of-print books. Proceeds will go to the Silver City Volunteer Fire Department in appreciation for use of the fire house office.

• June 7 - Lecture by Dr. Sue Fawn Chung, scholar on the Chinese in Nevada in the 19th century. Funded by Nevada Humanities, the task force and Storey County Healthy Community Coalition.
