The recently released Masters rankings from FINA, the world's governing body of swimming, of the top ten swimmers by age group in the world for 2005 show that a member of the Carson Valley Masters Manatees of Minden, Pierre Hathaway, was listed twice.

Hathaway, who at 75 is one of the "young kids" in the 75-79 age group, was eighth in the world in the 100 long course meters (50 meter pool) backstroke with a time of 1:42.60 and ninth in the 200 meter backstroke event with a time of 3:49.64.

Pierre, who works out at the Carson Aquatic Center, attributes his success to coaching tips from Nobuko Nojuri, who has served as a coach for the Carson Tigersharks and physical training from Dana Olvera of Nevada Fitness. He says working out at this altitude is definitely a plus. He also says that the hardest part was cutting down on pizza, ice cream and beer.

His next major challenge is the bi-annual World Masters Swim Championships in August, which for the first time since 1992 will be held in the United States, at the world-renown Stanford University Swimming Complex. This will be a "homecoming" for Hathaway who played water polo and swam at Stanford from 1947 through 1951.

Early estimates put the number of competitors in the August event as high as 8,000 athletes from 60 countries, participating in swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water competition. This would be the largest aquatic event in history.
