The Dayton High baseball team beat one of the Northern 3A's best pitchers on its way to picking up a huge sweep against Truckee at home on Saturday.
Dayton beat Truckee ace Ben Tonon 11-7 in the opener and won the nightcap 14-4 in a game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. The Dust Devils improved to 6-2 in league, moving into second place.
"The kids played really well," Dayton coach Craig Miller said. "They did a really good job.
"We knew Truckee was going to be a difficult opponent. They were just aggressive from the get-go.
Joe Delaski went the distance to pick up the win in the opener, striking out seven. Brandon Aguilera, Tom O'Brien and Cory Yoder all had two hits and two RBI and Jeff Delaski had two hits and an RBI.
Yoder pitched a complete game in the nightcap, striking out seven and allowing four hits. Yoder was also 3-for-3 with two RBI as Dayton pounded out 14 hits.
Anthony Onstott, Jason McKinnon and Jeff Delaski each had two hits and two RBI and Aguilera added two hits.
DAYTON SOFTBALL SWEEPS
Sierra Barnwell struck out 16 on her way to picking up the win in the opener and Dayton went on to sweep a doubleheader against Truckee. The Dust Devils won the opener 7-5 and the nightcap 9-5.
Breanne DeHaven also went 6-for-8 in the doublheader. In the opener, Barnwell pitched a complete game and added a hit. Katy Cross went 3-for-4 with a run, Brittany Hill had a double and an RBI, Melony Cox had two hits, Sara Simmons had a hit and an RBI, DeHaven was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, Amanda Beard went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Toni May had a hit and an RBI.
Brittany Burrows was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, pitching a complete game and striking out seven. She was also 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Barnwell had two doubles and two runs, Melissa Goetz and Simmons each had a hit, Cross had two hits, an RBI and two runs, Hill had a hit, two RBIs and a run, DeHaven went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run, Cox had a double, RBI and a run and Amanda Brandenburg had a hit and an RBI.
