UPS store sponsors 'Design Dale's Ride' kids' contest

The UPS store at 9 Retail Road in Dayton is sponsoring the 2006 Toys for Tots campaign. The "Design Dale's Ride" coloring contest for kids through Saturday.

Children can design this year's UPS Store/Toys for Tots No. 88 Ford, which NASCAR legend Dale Jarrett will race in November. Ages 5-12 may submit entries at any UPS store to receive one free color copy of their submission. The winner will receive a trip to the Pepsi 400 at Daytona for the unveiling of the car. The winner's school will receive 10,000 free copies from the UPS store and an art supplies package for the art department, courtesy of Crayola.

Get your feet wet on an El Dorado Canyon hike

A hike is scheduled in El Dorado Canyon near Dayton Saturday. The riparian habitat means many stream crossings. See varied rock formations on an in-and-out 12-mile round-trip hike on a jeep trail. No dogs allowed.

Entertainers sought for 'Noodles' fest May 13

The Cultural and Performing Arts Committee is seeking new members and Silver and Gold Comstock Singers to provide entertainment for the Oodles of Noodles festival on May 13. Call 246-3064.

Vendors wanted for Lyon County Fly-in May 20-21

The Lyon County Fly-In and Air Fest May 20-21 at the Silver Springs Airport, is looking for craft booths and other vendors

Opera Company concert features nine female singers

Nevada Civic Light Opera Company, a Carson City-based nonprofit corporation, will present "The Head Chefs, Divas and Desserts" at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City today through Sunday. All tickets are reserved at $20.

The show is a catered-pastry event with complimentary desserts and nonalcoholic beverages (alcohol can be purchased from Piper's separately).

Female vocalists of Nevada Civic Light Opera Company will provide the entertainment and a program of classical, contemporary and Broadway music accompanied on the piano by Donna Axton.

Audiences will also enjoy complimentary beverages and world-class desserts served by the comedy of Jon Hasty and the Head Chefs. Show times are 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call (775) 847-0433.

Chili cooks wanted for Cinco de Mayo cookoff

Chili cooks are being sought for the Virginia City Cinco De Mayo Fiesta and ICS Chili Cookoff May 6-7.

The event will feature an International Chili Society contest in the Bucket of Blood parking lot on C and Union streets and a People's Choice chili contest along the boardwalks of C Street.

The two-day fiesta, sponsored by the International Chili Society and the Nevada Commission on Tourism, will also include strolling mariachi musicians on May 6, piƱatas for children both days and a parade on May 7.

New Beginnings Thrift Store to hold raffle

The New Beginnings Thrift Store will hold a raffle Saturday at their store in Virginia City. In addition, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday hours have changed to 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturdays have half-off item specials, and seniors get 20 percent off on Wednesdays. Celtic harpist Ball plays Fourth Ward School

Celtic storyteller and harpist Patrick Ball appears at Virginia City's Fourth Ward School's Weigand Hall Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for members and seniors. Call 847-0975. Ball has appeared several times in Carson City and has recorded three spoken-word albums and nine instrumentals.
