Western Nevada Community College's baseball team (29-15, 23-9 in conference) will have its first homecoming this weekend when the Wildcats play their inaugural games at John L. Harvey Field on the WNCC campus, 2201 West College Parkway.
To celebrate the opening of the new field, admission is free to Friday's doubleheader against College of Eastern Utah that starts at 1 p.m. Gov. Kenny Guinn will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
"This is our way of saying thank you to the community and the many individuals who have supported us," WNCC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "We'd also like to invite the public to come out and support the home team. We'd love to get a real home field advantage going."
Whittemore said more than two dozen area companies and numerous donors helped WNCC complete the project.
"This $1 million field is 13 months in the making," he said. "It's a great example of hard work and generosity coming to fruition."
The Wildcats will play their eight remaining games at John L. Harvey Field.
After sweeping four games from Colorado Northwestern last weekend, WNCC moved within a game of first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. They are in third place, a half game behind from Dixie State (23-8) and one game behind first-place Southern Idaho (23-7).
Saturday's doubleheader will start at noon. Admission prices are $6 for adults, $3 for seniors ages 60 and over, $3 for youth 17 years and younger, free for WNCC students with a current identification card, and free for children under age 4 accompanied by an adult. Tickets are good for both games of a doubleheader.
Whittemore said that only 70 stadium seats are in place so fans coming to the games should bring a chair.

Another academic honor for Carter
The academic honors continue for Carson High graduate Paul Carter, who has received All-Academic recognition from the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the NAIA.
Carter, a junior wrestler at William Penn in Iowa, has maintained a 3.743 grade point average in physical education and health.
Forty-two individuals from 12 different NAIA schools were represented on the team. To be eligible for the award, athletes must be a national qualifier with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above. Carter qualified for this past season's NAIA national championships. Earlier this year, Carter was recognized as an NAIA academic All-American.
