American Legion to hold Rally for the Troops

The American Legion High Desert Post 56 will hold a rally for the troops from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. today in front of the Legislative Plaza at the corner of Fifth and South Carson Streets in Carson City.

All veterans and residents are welcome and are encouraged to bring an American flag or a banner in support of the troops in Iraq. Call 884-3377.

Carson Pride Week coming to a close

The 17th annual Carson Pride Week Annual Community Cleanup will be coming to a close this weekend, with free dumping at the Carson City landfill with a driver's license or state ID card showing residency in Carson City. This service is available today and Sunday. Call 882-6066.

Carson City Democratic Women to clean highway

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club has volunteered to help with the Adopt-A-Highway program. They have chosen the area of Highway 395 just north of the intersection with Highway 50 (Spooner Summit). The first cleanup will be today at 8 a.m. at McDonalds, south of Raley's. Eddy Street Book Exchange to host jam

There will be an acoustic jam from 2:30-5 p.m. Sunday at the Eddy Street Book Exchange at 1225 Eddy Street in Gardnerville. All levels of experience are welcome; those interested should bring copies of lyrics, and chord and tab sheets. The public is invited to attend.

Documentary on the Chinese and railroads to play in Reno

The life, culture, and contributions of the Chinese railroad workers of the late 19th century will be explored during a free cultural heritage program entitled "Tireless and Unremitting: The Chinese and Nevada's Railroads," which shows at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. Call 785-5961.

Animal Ark celebrates arrival of two cheetah cubs today

Two cheetah cubs have arrived at the Animal Ark Sanctuary and will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today. Refreshments will be available.

Sheriff's deputies to go head-to-head with 49ers

The Washoe County Deputy Sheriff's Honor Guard will be hosting this year's charity basketball game. The Washoe County Sheriff's Deputies will be playing against the San Francisco 49ers, who the deputies defeated last year.

Children are encouraged to shoot free throws after fouls have been committed, and autographs will be available from 49ers and deputies.

The game takes place at 7 p.m. at Reed High School, located at 1350 Baring Blvd. in Sparks.
