Silver Sox bomb San Diego

RENO - The Reno Silver Sox celebrated their return home in grand fashion.

Mike Done blasted a grandslam and drove in five runs, and Phil Grau and Masashi Chikazawa also homered to lead Reno to a 19-6 win over San Diego in a Golden Baseball League game Tuesday night at Peccole Park.

The Silver Sox, who pounded out 20 hits, got contributions from nearly everybody who played.

Bub Madrid went 4-for-6 and drove in three runs, Marcus Jensen went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs, Chikazawa went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs, Done went 3-for-6, Grau went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, Steve Booker went 2-for-6 with an RBI and James Shanks went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

"With our offense struggling, it was nice to come home and see them scoring runs and getting that many hits," Reno manager Les Lancaster said. "It's been a (tough) transition with guys leaving and then (Rich) Giannotti got hurt.

"We weren't getting guys into scoring position. We'd get runners to third with less than two outs and didn't get the job done."

Done got the job done in a major way. His grandslam in the bottom of the fourth made it 12-3, and really turned the game into a route.

"I needed it," said Done, who had driven in only four runs in his last 10 games. "We hadn't been putting up many runs. I've been in a little slump. Rafael (Melchione, hitting coach) and I worked on my swing. I'm trying to keep my weight back, and that helps me not swing at bad pitches."

Reno took a 2-0 in the first inning thanks to two errors.

Brandon Carter walked, stole second and went to third when catcher Nick Guerra's throw sailed into center field. After C.J. Lang lined to the pitcher, Jensen lofted a routine fly ball to left, which was dropped by Scott Goodman for a two-base error, allowing Carter to score. Jensen scored on a single by Shanks.

The Silver Sox made it 5-0 in the second, scoring all three runs after two were out.

Grau and Carter walked. Lang followed with a two-run triple to right-center field to make it 4-0. Jensen followed with a two-run double to score Lang.

San Diego broke through against Carlos Chavez in the third when Tony Garcia singled with one out and came around to score on a single by Will Henderson.

Reno tacked on another three runs in the third when Madrid singled and scored on Booker's double. Grau followed with his fifth homer of the year to make it 8-1.

Grau was 3-for-16 over the last five games, and was happy to have a breakthrough game.

"I've had too much adrenaline," Grau said. "I've been trying to slow the game down and play a little more relaxed. We need to get some good hitting. We've been getting good pitching. If we get our hitting going, we'll be good for the playoffs."

San Diego made it 8-3 when Derrick Pyles drove a Chavez fastball over the right-centerfield fence, and then Garcia doubled home Adam Mandel, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

That set the stage for Done's fourth-inning grandslam, which he said was his first as a professional. He said he hit a couple in college.

Reno added three more in the fifth, two in the sixth and its last two in the eighth. The final two runs came on Chikazawa's homer, his third since joining the team.

"He's definitely got some pop at the bat," Lancaster said. "One of his homers was opposite-field at San Diego. He has to adjust to this style of pitching. He's a threat."

Notes: The GBL has decided to have one senior umpire on each crew the rest of the season, and sometimes there may be two. Ron Barnes, who was a part-time umpire in the National League for several years and a former PCL umpire, worked first base on Tuesday. He will be in Reno the rest of the week. According to Reno GM Dwight Dortch, Jeff Henrichs, a former Triple-A umpire, is scheduled to work with Barnes this weekend ... Jared Bonnell (4-1, 4.98) opposes Jake Meyer (3-3, 6.29) tonight at 6:35 p.m. in the second of a three-game series ... First baseman Doug Gredvig missed the game because he was attending a funeral, according to Lancaster.
