Kids Karnival comes to Children's Museum

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St., will hold a Kids Karnival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The karnival will feature games and events such as tip the trolls, duck pond, dinosaur dig, face painting, miniature golf, make and invention, bounce house, plant a plant, go fish, easel painting, Bob the Builder, cake walk, table crafts, puppet show, hula hoop, dunk tank, yo yo contest, nail painting, bubble mania, boat race, hair braiding and more.

Special guests include members of the Nevada National Guard, McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog, Smokey Bear, Douglas County Building Industry Association, Bobby the Boat, Red's Old 395 Grill, Model Dairy Ice Cream and more.

Learn to paint Like Bob Ross at WNCC Douglas

The bushy-haired painter with the soft voice who encouraged viewers to paint "happy little clouds" and "pretty little mountains" has since died, but his painting methods live on.

Three noncredit, community service classes are being offered at Western Nevada Community College this fall that teach oil painting using the Bob Ross "wet on wet" method.

Special Topics: Arts & Crafts will cover Ross' painting techniques in three different classes. Landscapes will be the focus on Sept. 8, florals will be featured on Oct. 13, and seascapes will be highlighted Nov. 17. Each class costs $50, and lasts from 1-4 p.m.

A series of four different health-related community service classes are also being offered at WNCC Douglas starting Wednesday. Special Topics: Health & Fitness will cover ear candling for cleaning wax and debris from the ears, reflexology using massage to affect areas of the body, first-degree Reiki that teaches how to channel healing energy through the hands, and fibromyalgia and chronic-fatigue syndrome coping techniques.

Other highlighted for-credit classes are Basic Writing III, Personal Computing IV, and World Literature II. Basic Writing will help students improve their writing for school or on the job. Personal Computing is directed to seniors, but open to everyone. Students will learn various graphics programs, including PowerPoint and Publisher.

World Literature will survey literary masterpieces of the Western world after the mid-1600s.

Two Carson High graduates make dean's list at college of education

Colleen Etcheverria, 19, a freshman at the University of Nevada, Reno, made the spring 2006 dean's list for the College of Education. Etcheverria is 2005 Carson High School graduate.

Ambir Rackley, 20, a 2004 Carson High graduate made the dean's list at the College of Education at UNR for the spring semester 2006. She maintained at least 12 credits, had a grade point average of 3.65 or higher and worked 36 hours a week at the UNR computer lab.

Student makes provost's list at Chapman University

Catherine Rogers, of Carson City, was named to the provost's list for the spring 2006 semester at Chapman University in Orange County, Calif. Rogers reached a 3.6 grade point average or higher.

Carson High graduate makes dean's list at the University of Rochester, New York

Amanda Carlson, a junior majoring in political science at the University of Rochester, made the spring dean's list for the spring 2006 semester.

Carson High graduate makes dean's list in Bakersfield

Tamara Hall, 22, and a 2004 Carson High School graduate, made the spring 2006 dean's list at California State University, Bakersfield, by achieving a 3.38 grade point average . She is majoring in psychology and religious studies and will be a senior in the fall.
