Chad Lundquist/Nevada Appeal A Washoe Valley woman and a boy were injured after, for unknown reasons, she swerved, overcorrected, and rolled her Jeep Cherokee on Old Highway 395 Tuesday.
A Washoe Valley woman and a child were injured in a single-vehicle rollover on Old Highway 395 about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
According to Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Ron Larson, driver Char Mason, 68, was returning to her Franktown Road home after taking a group of 11- and 12-year-olds, including her grandchild, on an outing to Chuck E. Cheese's in Reno when, for unknown reasons, she swerved, overcorrected and rolled her Jeep Cherokee.
Larson said three of the children were able to get out of the vehicle on their own, but Mason and an unidentified boy sitting behind the driver's seat had to be cut from the wreckage.
Both Mason and the child were flown by helicopter to Washoe Medical Center. Larson said Mason's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. He said the boy sustained a "closed-head injury" and an apparent broken arm.
The other children in the vehicle reported Mason possibly swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway.
All the occupants were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident, Larson said.
The wreck caused State Route 429 traffic to back up for about three hours, with one lane opened after 90 minutes.
