Carson City


Donate blood; enter drawing to win TV


United Blood Services has issued a call for blood donors to prepare for the Labor Day Weekend. Donors must be in good health, 17 years of age or older, and have not donated in the past eight weeks. From Monday through Aug. 31, there will be a daily drawing for UNR Wolf Pack tickets and a grand prize drawing for a 42-inch plasma television. Convention and Visitors Bureau meets Monday


The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the conference room at 1900 S. Carson St.


Items scheduled include an update on the V&T Railway reconstruction project, and possible termination of the agreement between the V&T Railway Commission and the visitors bureau regarding the $4 million V&T bond funds and NDOT payment


Children's Museum holds 'Kids Karnival'


The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada will be holding it's Kids Street Karnival from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today at 813 N. Carson St. This is one of the museum's biggest fundraisers of the year. Features include the Nevada National Guard, the McGruff Crime Fighting Dog, Smokey Bear, Bobby the Boat, Red's Old 395 Bar and Grill, the Nevada State Museum and its "Beastly Encounters," Pluggie the Robot, and Model Dairy Ice Cream. Admission to the Karnival is free. Activities are 50 cents each and food is $1. Call 884-2226.


Douglas County


Staples offers event to honor teachers


Staples stores in Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe will be holding a Teacher's Appreciation Day from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today.


The first 200 teachers visiting these stores receive a Staples gift bag containing an academic planner, supplies and coupons. Teachers will also have the opportunity to preview new classroom tools and gather information on Recycle for Education.


DAWG hosts Hog August Adoption


The Douglas Animal Welfare Group will be holding its Hot August Dog Adoption from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the Petco, Highway 395 and Topsy Lane. Call 267-7325.


Washoe County


Children can learn to track animals


Children ages 7-12 years old can learn how to track animals by using footprints and scat as clues during a free Junior Naturalist program, "Tracks and Scat," at 1 p.m. today at Galena Creek Regional Park. Call 849-2511.


Dutch Oven class at Washoe Lake offered


Park rangers will teach participants how to prepare and cook basic Dutch Oven dishes at a Dutch oven cooking and sampling from 5-8 p.m. today at the Washoe Lake State Park. Participants will be divided into groups to make a different dish. Dutch ovens, also known as camp ovens, were used by early pioneers for the baking in their camps. Dayton library holds book sale


The Friends of the Dayton Valley Library will be holding a book sale form 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today at the Dayton Branch Library, 321 Old Dayton Valley Road. Call the library at 246-6212.


Dayton Valley Days coming next month


The 18th annual Dayton Valley Days street fair will be Sept. 16-17 in Old Town. The theme will be "Pause and Ponder, From the Schoolhouse to Museum" recognizing Dayton's having one of the oldest schools still on its original site in Nevada. "Pause and Ponder" was also the first name of the original Dayton settlement. The event will include a parade, show 'n' shine car show, a fine-arts show and sale, train rides, games for the kids, entertainment, crafts, antique dealers and vendors of all kinds. The event is sponsored by the Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue and benefits that group and the Dayton Historical Society.

Virginia City


2-mile/10K Silver Run set for Aug. 26


Virginia City's annual "Silver Run" a 2-mile walk/run and 10K run will begin at 7 a.m. Aug. 26, Virginia City at 191 S. D St. Both races begin in front of the Delta Saloon. The 2-mile route winds through the roads of historic Virginia City, while the 10K will include trails and dirt roads around town. Entry fee is $30, and proceeds benefit Hugh Gallagher Elementary School. Call 847-0977.
