Blood Services to raffle portable DVD player


In appreciation of those who donate blood this month, there will be a drawing of a portable DVD player at United Blood Services, 256 E. Winnie Lane. Every donor will also be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate for Michael's at the Inn, golf for two at Dayton Valley Golf Club, or a spa day for two courtesy of David Walley's Hot Springs Resort. UBS is open until 7 p.m. each Wednesday, and pizza is served to those who donate between 4-7 p.m. For information, or to make an appointment, call 887-9111. Walk-ins are welcome.




Stews to raffle Harley-Davidson Sportster


Stew's Brewery at the Lucky Spur, 302 N. Carson St., has 160 tickets available for purchase for a drawing for a Harley-Davidson Sportster.


Funds from the drawing will benefit Advocates to End Domestic Violence. The winner is required to pay sales tax, prep and any additional changes or fees Carson City Harley-Davidson has remaining in order to take title of the motorcycle. Stew's ownership, employees, staff or affiliates are not eligible. Participants must be present to win. For ticket information, call 883-7654.




Grimes Castle to open Friday the 13th


Grimes Castle, Carson City's newest haunted house, will be opening at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the vacant Wal-Mart building, 4209 S. Carson St. The house runs Thursdays through Sundays throughout the month.


On Thursdays and Sundays, Grimes Castle is open until 11 p.m.; on Fridays and Saturdays, until midnight. Cost is $11 per person. On Thursdays and Sundays, bring two cans of food or a jacket, blanket, or can of baby formula for donation to FISH for up to $2 off admission. Families that bring box of diapers for donation get a special family discount, as do firefighters, police officers and armed service members who show ID. There will be free local entertainment, the Gore Store and the Terror T-shirt shop. Grand Central Pizza and Pasta will be selling food. Cowboy poets to perform at the BAC Saturday


Cowboy poets Larry Maurice and John Tyson will be performing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center, 511 W. King St. Tickets are $16 for preferred seating and $13 for balcony. Toastmasters to hold a speech-training program


The Capital Nevada Toastmasters will hold a speech-training program starting at noon Tuesday at B'Sghetti's Restaurant. This eight-week program will teach the fundamentals of public speaking, including written speeches, audiovisual aids, body language and listening. Cost is $75, and registration is due today.
