Sept. 1 is the entry deadline for the first regional World Livestock Auctioneer Championship, which will be conducted Oct. 16 at the Central Oregon Livestock Auction in Madras, Ore. Three regional winners will be named at each of four contests, and the top eight will be eligible for the 2007 contest, to be June 16 in Springfield, Mo. The entry fee is $100. Contestants must be at least 18 years old and employed by an auction market that will sign a statement confirming status as auctioneer. Visual arts contest applications due by Sept. 11


The Nevada Arts Council is encouraging Nevada visual artists to submit entries for its annual visual arts competition to create the artwork that will be presented to recipients of the 2007 Governor's Arts Award. The commissioned artist receives $3,500 to create seven original works of art. Of the seven pieces, six will be presented as awards to the Governor's Arts Award recipients. One will be placed in the Nevada Arts Council's permanent collection. Works may be in any two- or three-dimensional medium.


Applications are at www.nevadaculture.org and are due by Sept. 11.

BAC's 'Jazz & Beyond' festival starts Friday


The Brewery Arts Center and the Mile High Jazz Band Association are pairing up for their third annual "Jazz & Beyond" music festival starting Friday and running through Sunday. Admission is free.

Streets to close for CHS fundraiser

Kids Superhero play in South Tahoe


The Lake Tahoe Writing Club at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday presents the original World War II Kids' Superhero Radio Play "Capt. Thunder and the Nazis" in the Valhalla Boathouse Theatre. This radio play features Capt. Thunder from the town of Harmony Cove who's on a mission to fight for liberty.
