Get ready for some ribs. This is my favorite event, and I don't even eat ribs. But going up to the John Ascuaga's Nugget Rib Cook-Off is always a fun family event for me and my three children.
Of course, I go for the onion blossoms dripping in grease and for the fun atmosphere.
Don't miss out on our local company, Carson City BBQ Co., owned by Phil Hyatt and Duane Felker - they have garnered trophies not only from the Sparks cook-off, but also in Fremont, Calif., and Portland, Ore. So support our local tasty ribs, and cast a vote their way.
You can enjoy five free concerts starting Wednesday with a variety of music thanks to the Nugget.

After the Rib Cook-off, I will need to participate in the Health Smart, Great American Weight Loss Challenge.
I lost eight pounds last year. This event is a great idea for co-workers, families and friends to participate in.
It only takes five people for a team this year instead of the 10 required in previous years. This is a great way to start thinking healthy. It is only 10 weeks and you weigh in weekly to make it easy for everyone.
It starts Sept. 16, so you need to get your teams selected and signed up. Doing this weight-loss challenge with others seems to make the weight disappear because you have this whole support group working with you.
Get the Sheriff's Department to challenge the Fire Department - I think I would like to see that contest.
I know one year a team from each school participated, and I couldn't believe how much weight people had lost. So be creative and get off your couches to have some fun with this event.
The fourth annual Great American Weight Loss Challenge
WHERE: Sign-ups and first weigh-in is held in the Carson City Community Center gymnasium, 851 E. William St.
WHEN: 10 a.m.Ð1 p.m. Sept. 16
COST: $150 for a team of 5

The Kerri Oxoby Memorial Scholarship tournament is coming up soon, and they are looking for a few golfers - both good and bad. You just have to want to have fun, like me.
I know that Ron Beck and Mike Watty from the Carson City School District are showing their support by playing in the tournament. I think it's great that this scholarship goes right back to two graduating seniors attending Carson High School each year.
Last year. I knew one of the two recipients - Aaron Osheroff. As he heads to the University of Nevada, Reno this year, I wish him luck. I hope more people would come out to support this event so they can continue to help other local children attain higher education.
Following the tournament is a barbecue at the Oxoby home.
