The Kerri Oxoby Memorial Golf Tournament for University of Nevada, Reno Scholarships is being held this Sunday. Each year the proceeds from this fundraiser raise enough money for two scholarships that are given each spring to two Carson High seniors. The first scholarships were given in May of 2001 and were originally valued at $1,000 each. In the spring of 2006 friends and family were able to raise enough money to award two $2,500 scholarships. If you would like to help raise money for this continuing scholarship program in honor of Kerri, come join family and friends at the annual golf tournament at beautiful Silver Oak Golf Course. There's a fantastic barbecue afterwards.

Soroptimist International with your support can help local women in receiving the assistance they cannot find anywhere else. The Soroptimist International of Carson City's Stroke to Help Fight Breast Cancer Golf Tournament has made a difference in 649 women who have received mammograms and another seven women who did not have the funds to find out if their tumor was malignant or benign. I realize that each year when it is election time we have far more politicians in these tournaments, but I would like to thank three locals who each year - election or not - sign up and support the fight against Breast Cancer: Judge Robey Willis and his wife, Barbara, Senator Mark Amodei, and former Mayor Ray Maysako and wife, Diane.

Here's one I've have never heard of, but if you like music this would be a fun group to join. Sable Shaw was telling me about this group that has organized people that enjoy hearing all types of music and want to listen and learn about music from bluegrass to jazz. The fees are minimal and each month you have one event you can attend at no added charge after you pay your initial membership. This coming month's event features a representative of the Nevada Opera who will come down to Carson City to give information on local opera. You can check them out the second Monday of each month at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall at 7 p.m. If you're interested, call the number below.
