What I do: I'm a registered veterinary technician with a special interest in veterinary dentistry. I recently completed a two-year credential process and examination to attain the title as a veterinary technician specialist in the field of dentistry.

Why this field interests me: Periodontal disease is the No. 1 disease affecting dogs and cats. Every animal coming into the hospital benefits from the effects of good oral hygiene, professional cleanings and treatment of advanced disease. The results are profound and extremely satisfying when an animal returns to a state of well-being and comfort. It may be a thorough cleaning that lessens gingival inflammation, or advanced oral surgery to alleviate severe pain when trying to eat or groom. Whatever it entails, the animals suffering is addressed, and the owner has a happy, healthy animal again.

Why I opened my business in Carson City: My interest and love of animals drew me to Sierra Veterinary Hospital 16 years ago as a hospital of accomplishment and compassion. From maintenance to tech assistant to licensed technician, each field has been an educational and exciting experience.

My credentials: Registered veterinary technician of six years, veterinary technician specialist in dentistry completed this year, veterinary technician representative on the Nevada Veterinary Medical Association Board, Truckee Meadows Community College veterinary technician program board.

My family: Daughter, Angela; son-in-law Rick; three granddaughters: Brianna, Haley, Taylor; mother in Newport Beach, Calif.; 11 brothers and sisters.

My pets: Six dogs all rescued; 12 cats, all rescued; various birds; a chestnut quarterhorse mare. I'm a rescue volunteer for Dogtown Rescue.

Best advice for pet owners: Remember that an animal of any kind is a big responsibility. Their happiness and quality of life are dependent upon your love and care. Meet the responsibility.

My life motto: Touch the lives that you can with all that you can give. Don't turn away when you are needed the most.
