More homes planned for near airport

A new housing development, Newport Village, is being planned near the Carson City Airport.

Members of the Planning Commission today will consider recommending preliminary plans, which would include an increase in density. The developer, Ascend 2006, seeks to build 43 homes on a 5.4-acre site in the 3800 block of East Nye Lane.

Though the location at East Nye and College Parkway is designated as a mobile home site, this proposal calls for typical home construction, according to the city planning division.

One resident is opposed to a zoning change because of traffic problems that could result when drivers enter or pedestrians cross College Parkway.

Deputies do "a fairly good job of patrolling College Parkway, but at commute times hardly anybody stops for pedestrians, and drivers tend to exceed the 35 mph posted speed limit," said neighbor Kathleen Thompson.

Thompson also said she hopes some of the older trees and vegetation on the site could be preserved.

Current rates for affordable housing range from $235,000 to $280,000, according to city officials. The developer's report said, "the project has been designed to accomplish this," with the higher density, and reduced street widths and lot sizes.

The homes will be single-family, two-story structures with either three or four bedrooms and either two or two-and-a-half bathrooms.

The airport signed off on the project as safe for air traffic. Tall buildings near an airport could be an obstacle to pilots trying to fly in and out, said Jim Clague, airport engineer.
