Learn how school bond would affect taxes tonight

Carson City School District officials will host a town hall meeting 6 p.m. today in the Carson High School Library to explain the effect of a school bond in light of new tax laws.

Voters will be asked to approve a $25,000 school bond in November that would go to building an addition at Carson Middle School, replacing the portable buildings there.

The rest would be used to complete general improvements throughout the district including a drainage system at Carson High School, roof repairs at most of the schools and infrastructural upgrades.

Open Space Advisory Committee meeting today

The Carson City Open Space Advisory Committee meets at 4 p.m. today in the Capitol Conference Room at City Hall, 201 E. Musser St.

Topics include Horse Creek Ranch and how Question 1 funding could be used to purchase a conservation easement.

Parks and Rec Commission to meet today

The Parks and Recreation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Among scheduled activities: Possible endorsement of a grant application for a "Trails Working Group" from Muscle Powered; discussions about Question 18 Quality of Life funding, the plan for a joint-use recreation center, the Great Weight Loss Challenge Program, and project funding possibilities through Residential Constriction Tax.

BAC holds auditions for 'Bugsy Malone'

BAC Stage Kids and the Brewery Arts Center will be holding auditions for "Bugsy Malone, Jr." at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. Auditioners aged 6 - 16 should come prepared to sign a song of one minute or less.

There will also be a short movement audition and cold readings. Show dates are Jan. 19 - 28, 2007. For information call 883-1976 or 887-0438.

Literacy organization to train volunteers

The Carson City Literacy Volunteers Organization will be conducting training sessions for those interested in tutoring adults in reading and writing English from 6 - 9 p.m. Sept. 13 and 14, and from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sept. 16 and 23.

All four classes must be completed for certification, and take place in Conference Room A at the Nevada State Library and Archives on Stewart Street. Registration is $25. For information call 885-1010.

Computer Classes at the senior center

Reservations are now being taken for September computer classes at the Carson City Senior Center. A basic "Introduction to Computers" begins Sept. 18, Mondays and Wednesday, 9 - 11 a.m. for four weeks. A 16 hour advanced course in Microsoft Word will begin Tuesday Sept. 19.

The class will meet Tuesday and Thursdays, 1 - 3 p.m. The course deals with editing and enhancing text. The tuition fee for each course is $40 payable at time of registration. Classes are limited to eight students on a first come, first served basis.

Pearl Harbor group plan picnic for Wednesday
