Carson City


Carson City Symphony to open 23rd season


The Carson City Symphony will be holding a concert to open its 23rd season at 4 p.m. tonight at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets are $12 general admission, and $10 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members. Children under 16 years of age are free. For information, call 883-4154.




'The Fix' musical holding auditions


Auditions for "The Fix," by John Dempsey and Dana P. Rowe, will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. Auditions will consist of pair d cold readings from the script and a prepared singing audition of one minute or less showing vocal range. Auditioners should provide recorded accompaniment or sing a capella. Production dates are Feb. 16-March 3.Call 848-8543.




Computer classes offered at Senior Center


Reservations are being taken for October computer classes at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center. "Introduction to Computers" is offered from 9-11 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 1-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. "Microsoft Word" classes will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes begin Monday and meet for four weeks. Fee is $40 per class.


A creative "Greeting Card" workshop is offered from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 3 and 10. The fee is $15; basic computer skills are required.

Douglas County


GOP to celebrate with ice cream and hoe-down


The Carson City and Douglas County Republican Central Committees will be holding a Western-style Ice Cream Social and Hoe-down in honor of Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Gibbons from 2-3 p.m. today at the Valley View Ranch, 1701 Pinenut Road in Gardnerville. Participants are encouraged to wear their cowboy boots and hats. For information, call 322-4546.




Genoa Bar holds annual costume contest


The Genoa Bar will hold its annual Nevada Day Old West Costume Party beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.


They're looking for Jesse James, Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, Kit Carson, Snowshoe Thompson, saloon girls, outlaws, sheriffs, gunslingers and folks who just want to have fun. A 21-shotgun salute will be presented by the Devil Mountain Brigade.


"Nevada's Oldest Thirst Parlor" will hold a barbecue from 2-6 p.m. and have live music featuring "String Machine" from 7-11 p.m.
