With less than a month before the ball drops and we bid good-bye to 2006, the Nevada Appeal is preparing for one final look back at the stories and events that helped define the year that was and we need your help.

We need you to let us know what stands out in your mind as the most important local and national stories of the past 12 months and why.

Use WNCC's online registration form for drivers' ed classes

Students at Western Nevada Community College can use the online registration system "Web-REG" to register for upcoming New Driver Education classes in Carson City, Minden and Fernley.

In the new registration process, students fill out the community education admission application at: www.wncc.edu/drivereducation/ and then mail, fax or bring it to the New Driver Education office at WNCC's Reynolds Center in Carson City.

Once this application is processed students can proceed with Web-REG and avoid a $15 application fee. Classes are open to anyone 15 or older.

Carson Tahoe gift shop holding open house sale

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary Gift Shop will be holding a Holiday Open House Tuesday through Friday.

All merchandise with the exception of Sees Candy, Ty Plush products, flowers and greeting cards will be 20 percent off. Call 445-5142.

Dog obedience classes at Fuji Park

Instructor Guy Yeaman will be holding dog obedience classes at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, starting Tuesday.

Each dog must have a choke chain and a fabric or leather lead, must be at least 4 months old, and be current on their shots. Cost for this six-week session is $75. Call 265-4530.

Volunteers, donations needed for Santa program for seniors

Senior holiday visits will be taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 16. Volunteers are needed, as well as donations of small packaged food items such as candy, cheese, crackers, salami and coffee. Also being accepted are things such as slipper socks, handkerchiefs and crossword books.

Cash donations are also accepted and are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). A $5 donation allows the program to buy the Polaroid film for each senior's photograph with Santa. Light refreshments for breakfast and lunch for all volunteers is provided. Call 884-0180. Members of the community are also asked to call if they know someone who would appreciate a visit.

Douglas County

Senior Home Companion program needs volunteers

The Douglas County Senior Services program is seeking volunteers for the Home Companion program. Home Companions offer companionship, assistance with simple chores and transportation for seniors who need assistance to live independently in their own homes. Anyone can volunteer. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage and are insured under the county's workers compensation program. For information, call 783-6455.

Democratic Women to meet Monday

The Douglas County Democratic Women will meet at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden. Nonmember guests are welcome. Cost is $18 at the door. A buffet luncheon will be served at noon. Call 265-3697.
